HISTORY / SOCIAL STUDIES APPS
National Geographic Today This app has beautiful photographs every day. Students may generate target language sentences (or fragments) while responding to the images. Students search for and select (into their memories) new vocabulary words, work with grammar and construct verb forms. Heidi
UN Country Stats - This app allows you to create bar graphs that compare two or more countries using the economic, geographic, political and social data collected for all UN member countries (193) in the years 2000, 2005, and 2009. It is easy to use and a clear visual presentation of a complex data set. - Greg Virtual History Roma ($4.99) This app has tons of information about History and Culture. There are timelines, map overlays, 3D objects, and The Bubble Viewer (which I have to sit down to use because it makes me dizzy). Heidi
SCIENCE APPS
Creatures of Light This free app from The American Museum of Natural History explores Nature's Bioluminescence. Amazing examples and videos, plus an excellent explaination of wave lengths. Heidi Nova Elements This free app provides an interactive periodic table, the video called "Hunting the Elements", and short clips called "Essential Elements". Heidi
PRODUCTIVITY APPS
Dropbox - Dropbox.com is a tool that I use with students so they can submit assignments as soon as they complete them. It is an only file folder system that appears as if it were a file folder for documents on your computer. These files can be shared so the teacher and student have a private exchange system for submitting and correcting assignments. I use this for essays in my English classes and for written projects in my UN Global classes. I like that I am able to track when the assignment was completed and students can see my comments and markings immediately after I complete them. Also students can easily revise and rewrite online for an improved grade after the first marking of most assignments. - Greg
Learnist is an App that allows a community of learners to share their knowledge andlearn from each other. It uses a variety of media and connections from individuals around the world. You need a Facebook account to use this application. Nicole
Pages: If you haven't asked for it yet, you should. Sitting at the Fair, I've been able to create a lesson plan, add pics, and send it to get copied all from the iPad. Jen R. I like this app too. Simple and elegant. - Greg
Scratchwork - Great app that lets you surf the web for research and then have you notepad right their available to take notes. - Jen B.
ShowMe is a presentation app that allows you to record voice while you are writing notes with a stylus. You can then post the presentation to the web for student viewing. I have used it to "flip" my classroom a bit. It takes some getting used to but I think it has a lot of potential. Joe
SimpleNote, Catch, and AwesomeNote I looked at three note-taking apps. SimpleNote, a free app, is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later and has been optimized for iPhone 5. This is a very basic app which only allows you to take notes. The only other features are the ability to organize notes by selecting a tag from the list and to tag people with whom to share. You can search notes and access backup versions of notes. Notes can be accessed on the web as well. The next is the free app Catch and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad requiring iOS 5.0 or later. It has been optimized for iPhone 5. This has more features to offer with the ability to take notes. It has more specific tags to use to organize your notes: todo, work, recipe, music, shopping. While there are spaces to put notes you want to share, there is also a My Ideas space which is completely private and cannot be shared. It is also possible to access your notes on the web. The tool bar icons look similar to most tool bars so it is easy to figure out. There are additional features that allow you to take a picture and have it inserted easily into your note. There is also a microphone feature. The third app, AwesomeNote, has the most features of all. There is a Lite (free) version 3.10. Another version providing more features costs $4.99. It is only compatible with iPad, and it requires iOS 4.2 or later. This app is a lot more than just a note-taking app. It has many features with organizational tools listed in tabs on the left including a calendar, a diary, a travel journal in which you can insert a picture from your camera roll, a drawing tab, and Quick Memo feature which resembles a post-it note. On the Quick Memo, you can type your note or choose to hand write it. A very useful feature is that it syncs with Google Docs and Evernote. So, if you just want to take notes, then SimpleNote is for you. It has a clean, uncomplicated looking screen. If it is important to be able to put private notes in a separate place and to easily insert a picture, then Catch should be your choice. Now if you want the ability to organize everything in your life and don't mind a relatively "busy" screen, then Awesome Note is the best app for you. Robin
